Fewer and more expensive turkeys for 2022, warn producers

UK shoppers are facing fewer fresh turkeys at higher prices this Christmas caused by avian flu, rising materials costs and labour shortages.

There may be a move towards frozen birds as these meet expectations of those on tighter budgets.

These birds being frozen may be produced all year round.

Kantar data shows turkey dales through supermarkets fell in 2021 in the 4 weeks prior to Christmas.

Many producers due to labour shortages and input costs rising are cutting production to mitigate
risk.

With the all the above factors, there is most likely to be a reduction in the number of turkeys available this Christmas.
